There are few stranger things than a Multiverse of Madness featuring not one but many parallel incarnations of Stephen Strange across alternate worlds.
We were challenged with a number of complex scenes in Sam Raimi’s mind-bending journey across universes.
Zombie Strange called for a ghoulish makeover to Benedict Cumberbatch’s face, torso and hands, both adding digital rotten flesh and removing parts of his anatomy to reveal bone and teeth.
The Spirit Cloak was an involved task for our character animators, weaving wailing wraiths and ghostly shapes with cloth simulations and bespoke FX, carefully treading the fine line between solid, liquid and gaseous appearance.
We helped give Magic centre stage, whether it be America Chavez’s blue crystalline star portals, the Scarlet Witch’s chaos powers or Wong’s rope dart and Eldritch Magic cage. We even conceptualized and created Zombie Strange’s corrupted Eldritch magic to break the spell on America.
The Mount Wundagore environment we assembled was based on an area of the Italian Dolomites and extended with digital matte painting. Skillfully crafted layers of heavy atmosphere and snow flurries were added during compositing.
The interior of the temple was created using 3D digital architecture and establishing external shots were achieved entirely in CG.
We also created the séance when Doctor Strange re-animated his dead alternate self into Zombie Strange, complete with digital candles, the Cloak of Levitation and partial digital double body.
