As one of the early pioneers in virtual production, we have been using motion capture for many years as a tool to close the gap between live action and digital production. On War for the Planet of the Apes, our advanced motion capture system enabled us to operate in incredibly challenging environmental conditions – from howling rain to mountain blizzards.
The Bad Ape Chase at NYCC gave fans a hands-on taste of our state-of-the-art motion capture technology for the first time ever. Our team devised a special system that turned fans into a performance capture actor without the complexity of being on a live action shoot. We fitted fans with partial motion capture suits and put them on a mechanical horse simulator to play the role of Caesar. We mapped them onto digital Caesar, giving them full control of his motion as they played out a fast-paced scene chasing Bad Ape through a snowy forest.
