A college student gets stuck with a group of strangers at a mountain rest stop during a blizzard. Things take a turn for the worse when the young woman discovers a kidnapped child in a van belonging to one of the people inside.
We enhanced the blizzard that forms the backdrop to the story. The beautifully lit plates contained a small amount of gentle snowfall, but as the premise of the story revolves around being snowed in, a lot of CG snow was needed.
The team made environmental augmentations to existing overhead drone shots of the travelling car, adding matte paintings to build out the mountainous terrain on the side of the road and trees to scenes in the forest.
We also modelled and textured additional vehicles—the red hero Camaro was based on on-set photography, and then we added a selection of cars you’d expect to see on a US highway. We added some handling imperfections to the animation to make the cars behave more realistically.
This thriller contains a fair amount of gore, pools of blood in the visitors’ centre, and smatterings of blood in the snow outside. Much of this was CG, and we created a digital double for the heroine’s wrist that gets nail-gunned to a timber wall.
Finally, we created a blazing fire that consumes the visitor centre. Some elements of the fire were made with practical effects, and we made them more infernal using digital enhancements.
