The Batman ventures into Gotham City's underworld when a sadistic killer leaves behind a trail of cryptic clues. As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator's plans become clear, he must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued the metropolis.
Our biggest single piece of work was the car chase where The Batman in the Batmobile is chasing down the Penguin in his Maserati. We augmented the live-action—sometimes with entirely CG shots, which our animation Supervisor Dennis Yoo choreographed in post-vis.
The sequence was shot in dry conditions but needed to be drenched in the ever-present Gotham rain to amp up the intensity of the chase. Rain may seem simple, but it is pretty random in how it behaves. We developed a new set of tools and templates for the technical task of simulating hundreds of millions of raindrops for every shot.
We did set extensions for City Hall for the Mayor’s memorial service. Working off 11 plates with swathes of green screens, we extended the interior of the building with models and matte painting and filled out the background offering glimpses of the streets on both sides of the building.
We also played a part in creating the expansive shot of the Batcave by adding a large set extension. For the close-ups, we created some bespoke lensing, creating vignettic bokeh effects for background light sources, adding to the moody ambience of a proper batcave.
