In James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, our favourite band of anti-heroes join forces to take down one of DC’s most iconic supervillains, Starro the Conqueror.
Starro was the first villain to face the original Justice League of America in the 1960 DC comic book, The Brave and the Bold #28. The Suicide Squad is Starro’s first appearance in live action cinema release.
Starro’s design and structure is loosely inspired by the humble starfish, however there were significant differences. Ocean-dwelling starfish do not have individual muscles but instead rely on their skin for movement. Starro, on the other hand, has a complex muscular structure and skin made of millions of blisters, created with vector displacements.
Our work culminated in an epic third act battle, which featured environment builds and city destruction of Jotunheim prison and island Corto Maltese. The prison was built brick by brick with the same structure and architecture as a normal building – steel bars, exterior cladding, everything – so its destruction would be as realistic as possible. The third act also showcases our creature work with the animation of King Shark.
