This means building on the data he has received from other departments and making sure all the disparate pieces align to form a physically coherent space in camera. Layout also includes blocking and dressing those environments to fit project requirements.

He joined Wētā FX via a 3-month undergrad internship with the Layout Department in 2020. He found it an amazing opportunity that allowed him to dip his toes into the industry before committing to it as a career. He had a great time in Layout and was welcomed back in 2021 as a junior TD after he graduated.

Josh loves working with so many incredibly talented artists. He’s constantly inspired and motivated by those around him. Also, getting to work on ground-breaking VFX projects is a huge bonus too!

ADVICE FROM JOSH: As someone who joined through an internship, Joshua recommends looking for potential opportunities and taking them seriously. Challenge yourself by creating progress inspired goals such as, ‘I want my showreel completed and submitted by…’ or ‘I’m going to learn this software so that I can…’.

Create a routine around this. Consistency is so important when developing yourself as a VFX artist.
